The excitement of getting your first tattoo is only met by the realization that getting a tattoo is a rite of passage because you made it through the pain. You're able to mark off a milestone from your bucket list. The rush you get when the needle first touches your skin to the feeling of having a sunburn for a couple of days after you get it; there is no other experience like it.
A tattoo does not have to be "meaningful" for you to get it on your skin. At the end of the day; it is your skin. When I was growing up, I swore up and down that I would never get a tattoo because I couldn't think of anything "meaningful" to get on my skin. After all, tattoos are permanent; I wouldn't want to get something that I could regret later on. It took me way too long to realize that life is short. I should do what I want and not seek other people's approval.
So, for my twenty-sixth birthday, I got Batman's head looming over Luke Skywalker surrounded by a colorful galaxy. I got Luke tatted on my skin because Star Wars is one of my favorite movies and I got Batman because he is my favorite superhero. Outer-space has always fascinated me with its vast sea of stars which is why I decided to get a galaxy on my arm. These ideas for my half-sleeve tattoo came from my interests. What's the moral of the story? Do what you want in life.
I do believe that tattoos are not for everyone. However, the people that do not like tattoos; usually use the argument that a person who has tattoos will look bad once they are old, to justify their stance. They argue that wrinkles will make the tattoos look bad and you will look silly as an old person with tattoos. To that argument I say; might as well do what you want because we are all going to die at some point.
Ultimately, tattoos are a road map of where you've been and what you have done in your life. They tell the story of where you were mentally when you got a certain tattoo. They are a reminder of the kind of person you were when you got a particular tattoo. When it comes to tattoos and how you personally should feel about what other people think of them; I like to refer to what Dr. Seuss said once. He brilliantly said, "Be who you are and say what you feel. Because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."- Dr. Seuss.
Fun fact: The word "tattoo" in Latin is stigma.
