All Dogs go to Heaven
Yesterday, the family decided it was time to put our sixteen-year-old diaper-wearing dog to sleep. Grace, nicknamed "Crazy"; lived a long and happy life. However, we knew that it was her time and we wanted her to leave this world with her dignity while providing her with comfort and the least amount of pain as possible.
When we first got Crazy; she was a young active Miniature Schnauzer, delighted that she was getting a new family to call home. Two days ago was a different story. Crazy had gone mostly blind in both of her eyes, had a hard time hearing, and her two back legs gave out from time to time because they could not support her weight. We knew that her time had come and we also knew that she was ready. When you build a lifelong relationship with your dog; somethings just come instinctively.
The decision to put our family dog to sleep made me think about all the dogs I had owned growing up. My dad and mom divorced when I was five-years-old which was very tough on me. What made things better for me and my brother were the dogs that we had by our side. On weekdays, we would spend time with my mom; during the weekends we would spend time with my dad on his farm.
The farm was a magical place because we had twelve dogs running around the farm at all times. On Fridays, My mom dropped us at the end of the driveway; all twelve dogs came out of the farm running with excitement to show their unconditional love for us. Out of the twelve dogs, I had a favorite one named Daisy. She was a big pitbull with the biggest heart in the world. Daisy would wait for all the other dogs to greet me because she knew that she always got my full attention afterward. Daisy was poisoned out of revenge by one of my dad's neighbors that hated him. I like to think that Daisy and Crazy are up in heaven playing and chasing the same car. I know lots of you can relate with your own dog stories from when you were growing up.
In life, people will tell you that they are sure of who they are and what their purpose in life is. I'm here to tell you that nothing in this world is as sure of who they are as a dog is. No one is as sure as a dog when it comes to knowing what their purpose is in this world. A dog knows that it is man's best friend through the bad and the good. A dog knows that they provide joy and happiness to its family without expecting anything in return.
If you've never owned a dog, I highly recommend that you do because you will not regret it. When you first get one, that puppy will start out as just a pet for the family. In time, that puppy will grow to become a member of your family. A dog's love is unlike any other love in this world. A dog's love is unconditional and ever-so-lasting. It does not come with terms and conditions. All you need to do is show the dog who you are and it will do the same.
I'll see you on the other side Crazy. Rest in peace.
Fun fact: A dog can smell a person's feelings.
