Growing Pains
My twenty-sixth birthday was a week ago which had me thinking about birthdays: what their significance are as you get older. When you are a kid, a birthday is the most important day of the year because it is a day dedicated entirely to you and of course we can't forget about all of the presents. As a kid, no one tells you that once you turn twenty-one; it is all downhill from there when it comes to the significance of birthdays.
I hope I don't come across as a pessimist but maybe more as a kid that grew up and became a realist adult. Once you turn twenty-one, the celebration of birthdays sort-of loses its pizzazz if you will and now simply it indicates the passage of time. After childhood, a person really only has three to four birthdays to look forward to; including a person's sweet sixteen, eighteen, and twenty-first birthday.
After I turned twenty-one, after getting over the massive hangover from the night before, I realized that I had one more birthday to look forward to now that I was a legal adult: my twenty-fifth birthday. In my head, I realized that once I reached twenty-five; I would enter "proper" adulthood because I could be able to rent a car and receive a lower insurance premium. Yeah, right! I'm twenty-six and a week old, I have yet to rent a car nor did I get a discount on my insurance. Thanks for the twenty-fifth birthday gift Geico!
I used to think the old expression, "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" was just an old wives' tale. Now that I'm older, I realize the opposite is true. As you get older you learn more tricks; you learn to grow past the material things in life and learn to appreciate what really matters in life. I hope that I never stop growing. I hope one day I learn all the tricks. I hope that one day I will receive the greatest gift of all: to find the surest form of myself.
Fun fact: you're born with 300 bones, but when you get to be an adult, you only have 206!
